Actor cum politician John Dumelo is advocating for governments’ term of office to be extended from four years.
He believes that four years has always not been enough for various governments in the past in Ghana to deliver on their mandate to the people.
The 2020 Parliamentary Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Ayawaso West Wuogon made a breakdown of why the four years is woefully inadequate considering the fact that the government has to settle in for the first year.
He believes that in Ghana if the term in office is increased, the people in the country will experience the development they are looking for because governments will have ample time for governance and also for other political activities.
“4 years is not enough for ANY President/ Gov to function effectively. The first year is used to settle down in the office and the last year for campaign, leaving only 2 years for effective work. We should consider 5 years per term.”
Adding that “Ghana and Nigeria are the only two countries in Africa who’s presidents only spend 4 years in office. The rest spend 5 or 7 years. Question: is there a correlation between number of years spent in office and development?, considering Ghana, Nigeria vrs the rest of Africa?”.
