A South African professor whose education was paid for by a stranger has started an online trend getting students to share their graduation pictures.
Mamokgethi Phakeng told mynewsghana OS how a stranger saw her results and offered to clear her university fees. She went on to graduate with her first-class degree in mathematics.
“I was doing honors in Mathematics and I was owing to the university so someone called Mr. Damoi offered to pay my fee. I didn’t know them, I didn’t know where he came from, he just looked at my results and said I will pay for this student,” Ms. Phakeng said.
Years later she has started the hashtag #MakeEducationFashionable to get people to share stories of the struggles they went through before finally graduating.
Here are just a few:
Failed matric very badly and was forced to work under very bad circumstances but God realty came throughout me and I had an opportunity to redo matric at age 25 and few tears later I had obtained 2 honors degrees in civil engineering at Uj..Jesus is king #MakeEducationFashionable
I failed my second year modules and i was financial excluded though i didnt want go home without a Degree,I build a shack and collected plastics and waste material to pay for my fees. Armscor gave me bursary and Graduate Programme(TDP).#MakeEducationFashionable
When I first came to University, NSFAS selection criteria was totally not in favor of the poor, APS & other unknown requirements had to be met. I was assisted by my brother with his bursary allowance to pay for my fees & living costs.#2in1#MakeEducationFashionable#Beltswag
