Amid visa sanctions; new US Ambassador calls on John Mahama (Photos)


The new US Ambassador to Ghana, Stephanie .S. Sullivan, has called on ex-president John Dramani Mahama.

The former Ghanaian leader on Thursday, February 7, 2019, granted audience to Stephanie, who called on him to formally introduce herself on assumption of office. The two discussed matters of mutual interest to Ghana and the US and recounted their encounter many years ago when Ambassador Sullivan was a Political Officer in the US Embassy, here in Accra.

The discussions among others touched on the recent violence and deployment of state-sponsored vigilante groups during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election. The US Ambassador recalled Ghana’s credential as a model of peace and security, and appealed to Mahama to continue to support efforts towards sustaining peace across the country. Mahama raised the need to ban, totally, the formation and deployment of political para military groups and vigilante groups like the ones deployed by the governing party last Thursday.New US Ambassador Stephanie Sullivan calls on John Mahama (Photos)He also assured the US government through the ambassador of his commitment to peace and security. had earlier reported how the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in collaboration with Department of State announced visa sanctions on Ghana because the country has failed to accept its deported citizens from the United States

Acting account to the law contained under section 243(d) of the Immigration and National Act (INA), the secretary of homeland security, Kirstjen Nielsen informed Mike Pompeo, the secretary of state that Ghana has unnecessarily delayed in accepting its deported citizens, Homeland Security reports.

But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has expressed disappointment over visa sanctions on Ghana by the United States of America.
