The announcement of the Independent Special Prosecutor in the person of Martin Amidu is a way by which government wants to shift attention from the public hearing of a committee set up by parliament to probe the ‘cash for seats’ involving the Ministry of Trade and Industry, a member of the minority in parliament has alleged
Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North Constituency, Alhaji Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini disclosed that it is laced with propaganda to cloud attention on that to the detriment of revelations being made at the public sittings on the saga.
Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye last week set up a five-member Committee to probe the alleged sale of presidential seats to expatriates by the Trades Ministry.
The decision followed a thorough debate on the floor after an urgent motion was filed by the Minority and duly signed by 15 percent of its members who demanded a full-scale investigation into the matter.
After an earlier “procedural irregularities” in the motion, which led to the suspension of sitting, the Speaker has granted the wish of the Minority.
On Thursday January 11, 2018, the committee begun its sittings with the appearance of key witnesses including majority Chief Whip Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak and MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
It was also the same day President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo named former Attorney General and Minister of Justice as Ghana’s First Independent Special Prosecutor pending Parliamentary approval.
But Suhuyini who appears unhappy said:” Propaganda master stroke!!!! Immediately after a repulsive Parliamentary PUBLIC hearing on “cash for seats or access” to the president by expatriate business owners. The President PUBLICLY announces Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor to do a job, the AG has started doing and stated yesterday, was not waiting for the special prosecutor. It diverts attention from the grim picture the Parliamentary Committee of enquiry painted of the presidency and Government today. Martin Amidu, a bitter founding member of the NDC will be responsible for unsuccessful-prosecutions and not Nana Addo’s NPP Government”.
