Asikuma-Akosombo-Kpong road: 40 killed in Motor Traffic Accidents


A total of 40 people, 23 males and 17 females, were reportedly killed in 77 road crashes on the Asikuma, Akosombo, Kpong and Somanya roads between January and September 2017, can confirm.
Statistics contained in a document signed by the Akosombo Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, DSP Richmond Akwasi Yeboah indicated that a further total number of 148 injuries were recorded during the crashes.
The document also disclosed that a total of 106 vehicles were involved in the crashes while another 28 persons were knocked down by vehicles during the same period.
Of the total number of vehicles involved in the road crashes in the area, 49 were commercial vehicles with 40 being private and a further 17 motor bicycles.
The deaths, according to the statistics represents an increment over a figure of 35 which was recorded within January to December, 2016:
“There has been a significant increase in the accident cases within the period under review,” the statement said.
According to the MTTD Commander who doubles as a prosecutor, “speeding and failure to observe road traffic regulations were the major causes of road accidents in the jurisdiction.”
