Blame GES for postponement in SHSs reopening dates – Africa Education Watch

Education Think-tank, Africa Education Watch has expressed worry about the way and manner the Ghana Education Service (GES) is handling the double-track system for the Senior High Schools (SHS) in the country.

According to the Organization, GES should have known with data how to manage the challenges that confront the Senior High School academic year calendar by now, since it has been confronted with such issues in the past.

“It is unfortunate that we are still experiencing erratic postponement calendar of the GES, this is about the 8th or 9th times we are seeing the academic year calendar being subjected to frequent last hour changes between 2018 and now,” Kofi Asare, the Executive Director for Africa Education Watch stated on GHOne TV on Wednesday.

He disclosed that contrary to claims that the current challenge is a resource issue, “it is an issue of infrastructure deficits.”

“The GES management must take full responsibility for these avoidable lapses. Three weeks ago GES announced that it is going to start double track for Form 1 students, why, because of space. One was expecting that there is a different reporting day for gold track and green track.

“Unfortunately, both tracks were asked to come to school on the same day and they were going to stay in school for two months before one track will come home. It was obvious from that point that it was not going to be possible for Form 3 students numbering about 4000 to come to school and join the double-track Form 1 students and Form 2 students. It wasn’t going to be possible,” he disclosed.

However, the Council of Heads of Assisted of Secondary Schools (CHASS) has apologised to parents for the development.

“The furniture and beds that we need for those facilities have not been provided yet for many schools, so we drew management’s attention that though these structures are there but we need these things for them to be functional,” CHASS stated.
