Consult Afari-Gyan on Voters Register issues – Afriyie Ankrah tells EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has been advised to consult Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, the former EC Chairman on election related issues.

According to the Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, consulting the former EC chair would enable the Commission to get the necessary advice to prevent any challenges.

The EC Thursday announced that it will compile a new Voters Register for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana.

After the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, EC boss Mrs Jean Mensah, stated that a limited registration of new voters prior to district level elections and a referendum in May 2019, would also take place in all district offices of the Commission across the country.

According to a statement by the EC, the consensus was reached following an IPAC meeting held on Wednesday, March 27.

But, the Director of Elections on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen Thursday stated that such a decision was never taken during Wednesday’s IPAC meeting.

He described the EC chair’s posture as dangerous and therefore should be disregarded.

“The posturing of the EC is very dangerous, very dangerous and if nothing is done about it, it can create confusion. The current EC administration is really finding it hard to deal with issues concerning elections and voting. They should go and consult Afari-Gyan on how to manage such an office,” he said.

His party, he said, demands the immediate withdrawal of the communique issued by the EC because no such consensus was reached.
