A former Central regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey-Pappoe, has admonished parents to teach their children how to swim. According to him, swimming, as well as key survival techniques will help avert disasters during heavy rainfalls. Allotey-Jacobs stated that more people could lose their lives, especially in Accra, if there should be consistent rain for two days.

As an immediate measure, the former NDC regional chairman warned of dire consequences if nothing is done about the floods. The Meteorological Agency has predicted thunderstorms and heavy rains during the rainy season, in the south of Ghana. In recent downpour, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reports that seven bodies were retrieved from floodwaters at different parts of the capital following heavy rains. The situation has triggered government to allocate GH¢197 million for the desilting choked drains and other drainage works in the country. However, Jacobs, on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, said the perennial flooding would not stop until there is attitudinal change.

He explained that, overcrowding, lack of proper drainage system and building on waterways mean many residents would be displaced after just about two hours of heavy rains. Jacobs said though desilting choked drains is laudable, the lasting solution is to build more storm drains to avert flooding.
