Edward Asomani to take over National Security from Maj-Gen Francis Amanfo

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will soon name a former Danquah Institute Staffer, one Edward Kwaku Asomani who was only recently named Deputy National Security Coordinator to take over as National Security Coordinator after what insiders say is an ‘internal coup’.

Mr. Asomani who had served as head of Analysis at Danquah Institute joined the National Security outfit under the Akufo-Addo government only about 2 and half years ago and was only in February this year (2021) made Deputy National Security Coordinator under controversial circumstances. Edward Kwaku Asomani in November 2018 was leading a ‘partisan agenda’ as Executive Director of the Danquah Institute (DI).

Also appointed in February this year was Major General Francis Adu Amanfo (Rtd) whose job his deputy Asomani has been eyeing and sources say it appears to be working as the political godfathers at the Jubilee House and other places are set to hand over the job to Mr. Asomani as National Security Coordinator soon.

This has led to more infighting and bickering than delivering on a National Security mandate where the nation faces risks. This has reportedly led to division within the ranks of the National Security staff as some show loyalty to General Amanfo, while others take instructions from Asomani.

Critics of Major General Francis Adu Amanfo cite his advanced age as justification for him to leave the scene.

Major Gen. Adu Amanfo replaced the late Joshua Kyeremeh who died a few months ago due to alleged complications from Coronavirus.

The ex-Army commander, General Adu-Amanfoh, who has served in various sensitive security roles is believed to be leveraging his experiences at a time the country faces critical threats.

The General served in diverse command and staff leadership positions in the Ghana Armed Forces for 37 years. In the last six years of his outstanding military career, he was Chief of Defense Intelligence of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Ghana.

The General served as Ghana’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Liberia from 2006-2009 under the presidency of John Agyekum Kufuor.

Prior to his new appointment, he was the resident Ambassador of Ghana to the Republic of Mali, with concurrent accreditation to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

Francis Adu-Amanfoh had his secondary school education at Prempeh College where he obtained his GCE Advanced level certificate.

Mr. Asomani on the other hand is a research analyst with experience from private practice and Danquah Institute, from where his bosses placed him into the books of the National Security.

Before joining the Danquah Institute, he worked in Academia Health and Finance.
