The fight you’re starting is the type I love – Education Minister to aggrieved Teacher Trainees

Minister of Education, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh has said the decision by the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) to fight his outfit over the policy to introduce National Service for them is exactly the type of fight he fancies, MyNewsGh.com can report.

The minister has been accused by the students of being one of the worst sector ministers in their opinion promising to fight him until their demands for posting outside the NSS is met.

The TTAG members who demonstrated yesterday and sent an apology to former President Mahama for voting against him say they were supposed to be posted in September this year but the government, according to their intelligence, intends posting them to do the one-year mandatory national service, which, they say was not part of the initial agreement. They said their members are not ready to do their national service but rather want to be given permanent appointments.

In response to this development, the Minister is quoted to have said at the launch of a World Bank report in Accra.

“I heard the teacher trainees say that ‘yes, we are going to do induction and probation’ but ‘we don’t want to do national service’, really? When we say your induction and probation period is the same as your national service period, why don’t you want to do it? Nurses do it, doctors do it, lawyers do it.” he said.

“Everybody who has gone through the tertiary system does national services. So everybody is going to do it. It is a fight I’ll love because you have to tell me why you are better than somebody else. If you don’t do your national service we don’t get to employ you. We are going to do it,” he added.
