Ghana captain Andre Ayew takes responsibility for poor AFCON 2019, eyes 2021 trophy

Ghana captain Andre Ayew has taken full responsibility for the Black Stars’ disastrous Africa Cup of Nations campaign in 2019 and hopes to make amends in Cameroon next year.

The Black Stars were eliminated at the round of 16 by Tunisia after a horrible display from the four times Africa Champions.

Ghana has qualified for the 2021 Nations Cup with Ayew playing a pivotal role both on and off the pitch, scoring a crucial brace in the win against Sudan in Cape Coast. The Black Stars qualified with a game to spare thanks to the captain’s heroics.

“I take full responsibility for that campaign as the captain it was unacceptable and we have spoken about this as a team,” he told the BBC.

“I still hurt from that but as captain, the pain is good because its pain that doesn’t just go away it’s a pain that reminds us that we owe our people the trophy or at least our all.

“We have qualified for Cameroon and we have to prepare and be ready because we have a very good core now and with this core and a little guidance and sacrifice-we can finally achieve our aim.”

Ayew and his teammates are expected in Ghana next month for the double international friendlies against Ivory Coast and Morocco.
