Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, has revealed that Ghana is on the verge of producing its own COVID-19 vaccines locally.

At an update on the country’s ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr. Agyemang Manu said some three local companies have submitted government proposals and have also readied their factories to start local manufacture.

“There are about three or so local companies who have already started preparing factories for covid-19 in Ghana. The committee has visited one of them and I am yet to visit the other one. They have sent proposals to the committee and they are having serious engagement with the committee,” he told journalists in Accra.

He however did not name the companies.

The announcement comes in the wake of global vaccine shortages that threaten the erode the benefits that the first round of vaccination may have brought Ghana.

international vaccine maker, AstraZeneca, has not been able to keep up with global demand leading to a stagnation of vaccination programs in countries around the world including Ghana.

According to the Health Minister, members of a committee put together by the government to produce an action plan on how the country can develop and manufacture its own vaccines, have already visited some of the companies.

The committee is chaired by former Environment and Science Minister, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng.
