Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has sarcastically thanked the two UK tabloids who reported that he is currently broke.
The 33-year-old was recently in the news after reportedly filing for a divorce at the Matrimonial Division of the Accra High Court. Gyan and his wife Gifty have been together since 2003, but finally tied the knot five and half years ago.

However, the couple are going to a tough period currently, with their marriage almost on the rocks. The Kayerispor striker has filed for an annulment of his marriage and is reportedly claiming that the kids he has with Gifty are not his. Days ago, reports emerged in the local media that Gyan has declared himself broke after telling the court that he has only GHc4,000 in his accounts.
According to a report by MyNewsGh.com, the Ghana captain was asked if he had any other accounts in the countries where he has played football. But Gyan said the only account he had was one in Turkey that was it was empty, explaining that his club is not paying him. The news caught the attention of the international media, with some UK tabloids jumping on it. Two of them were The Sun and the Mirror, who both reported that Gyan is currently broke. The Sun had its headline titled: “Asamoah Gyan reportedly ‘broke’ despite once being one of the world’s best-paid players.”
The Mirror also wrote: “Asamoah Gyan ‘broke and hasn’t spoken to his wife or children for months’”. But responding to this, the striker sarcastically applauded the two tabloids for what he described as “hype”. In a Twitter post, Gyan wrote: “Thanks to @MirrorFootball and @TheSunFootball for the hype” accompanied by a host of laughing emojis. It remains unknown whether Gyan is broke or not, but his latest post seems to suggest there is more to come concerning this issue.
