One year ago I developed a large build up of fluid in my stomach. After about two weeks of gritting my
teeth and telling people “no I’m not pregnant”. I decided it was high time to take a trip to the emergency
room. The doctor on assessing my situation, haphazardly inserted a large needle in my stomach to drain
off some of the fluid, while my boyfriend squirmed in a corner. Turns out my stomach was now a human
water balloon and they drained around 4 liters in the space of half an hour. I was then promptly
forwarded to the laboratory but the tests on the fluid showed signs of inflammation and a possible
Fast forward a couple days later, after many tests, scans and medication etc and my stomach not showing
any signs of the fluid going way they decided to insert a more semi-permanent drain. Which I discovered
hurts like hell. This seemed to do the trick for the actual fluid, of which we drained another 8 liters.
After doctors had taken a look at some stomach scans in a desperate attempt to find what on earth was
causing the fluid, they found what looked like tumors on my liver. But the liver specialist who had run
tests thought, no. They are wrong, I believe it is primary liver cancer. We needed to start chemotherapy immediately.
During the days before my diagnosis, I should also mention my boyfriend was forced to move to the
Zanzibar. I had planned to join him in April of that year (2019). Tickets were bought, he was essentially forced to move for work. It was a weird and difficult time. At this time I hadn’t been diagnosed and I
thought, ill postpone my move to later this year. Three days later, I got that diagnosis and I was forced to tell him over a phone call. During the same week, his best friend also passed away it was really a rough time. Then came the discussions on how they were going to treat me. Many options were considered and my boyfriend sent me the contact of Kiwanga Doctors because we did not know what to do. At this point, anything was worth a shot because I was told my heart would not sustain a single liver transplant, and I had two years to live. Kenya doesn’t do liver transplants, so this meant I had to go abroad to a country
like India, Belgium, or the UK that can do heart liver transplants. But this was an expense I could not afford.
My mother called Kiwanga Doctors and made an appointment. Since I could not move, Kiwanga Doctors decided to come to visit me at Aga Khan International hospital. We met in my hospital ward on my bed, I was exhausted, drained, and confused not knowing what to do. I can honestly say the Kiwanga Doctors helped me so much in an immensely confusing time. The doctors made a healing spell and promised that it would help relieve the pain I was feeling and also continue to keep me safe until I was discharged from the hospital. The pin-sharp pain I was feeling before Kiwanga Doctors came disappeared by midday that day but I was not yet completely healed. After about 2 weeks’ worth of collective treatment together with the
spellbook, and multiple doctors the liver specialist decided to do a test of my liver again before
recommending me for further treatment.
One test and two 2 weeks later, I no longer had liver cancer. The doctor who was attending to me was
very shocked and said he could not believe it. “You have healed miraculously, I have never seen this in the 35 years I have worked in this profession!” he confessed. I am now living in Zanzibar, with my boyfriend, and have been in better health than I have in a very long time. That experience left me, not with answers, but more questions. Ranging from the existential “why me?” “Is this a test from God?” To “surely I’m not the only one?” “What do you do in a situation like this?”
There is a lot more to this story, and by no means is this only what happened. I could honestly write a
book about the last one year. But for now, this is the tale of my liver cancer and how Kiwanga Doctors
helped me beat the disease. Because where cancer is involved, you never know
