Two individuals accused of igniting a fire that destroyed 30 shops in a storey building at Aboabo station in Kumasi, Ashanti regional capital, have been arrested by the Zongo District Police Command.
They are Kofi Gyimah, 37, an electric welder, and the store owner, Paul Akwasi Kwakye, 51.
According to the Zongo District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Ameyaw Afriyie, who confirmed the arrest of Class News’ regional correspondent Elisha Adarkwah, the electric welder whose services were requested by the shop owner to work on its shop in the storey building is said to have caused the fire in the welding process.
When fire broke out during the operation, they were nowhere to be found.
However, they were detained by the police when they went to the police station to file a fire complaint.
Both are in police custody to facilitate inquiries.
On Sunday morning, all 30 out of 60 shops on the top floor of the structure burnt to the ground.
