Rawlings vowed not to speak to Kufuor, I brought them together-Otumfour

The overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfour Osei Tutu II, has revealed that he was the person behind the peace which has come to exist between the two former presidents of Ghana, Jerry John Rawlings, and John Agyekum Kufuor.

According to Otumfour Osei Tutu 11, Rawlings vowed never to speak or meet Kufour after he won the 2000 general elections. As a peacemaker, he invited both for peace talks to settle their differences.

One of the meetings lasted 6 hours straight non stop. They began around 9 pm and ended by 3 am. It was after the meeting Rawlings agreed to conduct Kufour around the castle as the incoming president of Ghana.

He held another meeting on 16 February 2001 which finally cemented their relations and brought the war between the two former presidents to an end.

“I become King in 1999. After the 2000 elections, Rawlings vowed neither to speak with nor meet Kufuor. I had to summon both to a meeting before he agreed to invite Kufuor to conduct him around the Osu Castle as an incoming President before the handing over”

“When Kufuor became President if anything cropped up, he will ask me to speak to Rawlings just to allow peace to prevail which I have always done”, he disclosed at the event covered by MyNewsGh.com

“I represent the interest of Ghana and Asanteman. I am not an NPP or NDC. Whether we like it or not the two parties will continue to govern the country but it is also my interest and duty to ensure that peace prevails”, Otumfour Osei Tutu II added.
